Super 8 (2011)

Super 8 (2011)

Directed by: J.J. Abrams

Starring: Elle Fanning, AJ Michalka, Kyle Chandler

Steven Spielberg produced this J.J. Abrams film, which is probably why it looks EXACTLY like a Spielberg film. Apart from the big dumb CGI monster, the loud frightful action sequences, and the goddamn annoying insistence of including lens flares in every shot, Super 8 could totally pass for a Spielberg film from the 70’s. Hopefully Abrams learned something about how to be less terrible from this.

A zombie movie a group of kids are making back in the late 70’s is interrupted when a train crashes near their small town and strange things start happening. The kids deal with their own lives and a burgeoning romance as the army comes into town and weirder and weirder things go down.

I guess I’m trying to keep the ending a secret, but I’m not entirely sure why. It’s kinda goofy, and you don’t get a whole lot out of it… but it’s more about the characters discovering it than the audience, and that’s worth keeping intact. This is actually a pretty good movie, despite the main characters being kids and the problems that usually comes with. Really my only complaints are the J.J. Abrams-feeling parts of the film. Maybe I’m just an asshole who never changes his mind on things, though.
