To celebrate the Olympics, I decided to watch the only movie I could think of that had anything to do with them: Cool Runnings! Even though it’s about a winter olympics event and this is the summer olympics and I honestly don’t know if they’re still going on or not. I’m an American, the fact that I even acknowledge the existence of the Olympics makes me extra-worldly.
When three Jamaican sprinters accidentally trip during their qualifying race to be in the Olympics, they decide to get in the big game another way: by starting a Jamaican bobsled team! Luckily John Candy is an experienced bobsledder and is willing to train them in the ways of the bobsleigh. They make it to the ’88 Olympics in Vancouver where they eventually lose. It’s not a spoiler because it’s based on a true story and also who gives a shit.
Sure, I can buy a Jamaican bobsled team, that’s not so crazy, but saying that John Candy used to be an Olympic gold medalist? That’s stretching the disbelief a little too thin. Also, this is pretty close to death Candy, and he is not looking great in this film. You feel really bad for him whenever he has to… move or talk or anything that makes him out of breath and look miserable. Poor guy.
