Dracula 2000 (2000)

Dracula 2000 (2000)

Directed by: Patrick Lussier

Starring: Gerard Butler, Justine Waddell, Jonny Lee Miller

Here it is, my 2,000th movie review since I started this blog four years and one month ago. Now I gotta find a university that’ll give me an honorary degree in movie watching for time served.

Van Helsing (Christopher Plummer) has been keeping himself alive with Dracula’s (Butler) blood so he can watch over his body, but Hyde from That 70’s Show and the black guy from House steal it and bring Dracula back to life. Whoops. Now the lord of vampires is out to find Van Helsing’s daughter, because she has Dracula’s blood in her or something like that, and only Jonny Lee Miller (of Hackers fame) can save the world. The world is so fucked.

This movie is actually not terrible, and compared to the Underworlds and Twilights of recent memory, it does an amazing job at sticking to the original story of Dracula. It’s really more of a modern homage to the story than yet another retelling, and in a way that’s kinda neat. The casting director apparently just went to the bottom-barrel of TV actors who wanted to be in a movie, and that hurts the whole thing pretty bad, but otherwise it’s okay. Also, it has a better heavy metal soundtrack than Heavy Metal 2000, ironically.
