Masters of the Universe (1987)

Masters of the Universe (1987)

Directed by: Gary Goddard

Starring: Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella, Courteney Cox

I should preface this by saying that I never saw He-Man as a kid, so I have no nostalgia or even knowledge about the franchise. That being said, even I know enough about He-Man to know that he never only had one friend and then traveled through a portal to the real world where he dated Courteney Cox.

Um… He-Man goes through a portal to the real world and dates Courteney Cox. That’s basically what happens in this movie. Frank Langella is Skeletor and he sends some drones out after He-Man, which he defeats in an epic skateboard-mounted laser battle, but that’s about it.

For all the many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, things they got wrong with this film, the one thing they did get right was casting Dolph Lundgren as He-Man. That’s a 1 out of a possible 680. Very poor score, Masters of the Universe. You made a movie worse than Howard the Duck only one year after it came out with the same premise. In some horrible, backwards way, you gotta respect that.
