Outrageous Fortune (1987)

Outrageous Fortune (1987)

Directed by: Arthur Hiller

Starring: Shelley Long, Bette Midler, Peter Coyote

It’s kinda nice to watch movies like this sometimes. It’s something where I have no previous conceptions or hopes about, so whether or not it’s any good isn’t something I go into thinking about. Instead I mainly just think, “Why do I have this movie? Seriously, what the hell? Bette Midler?”

Midler and Long are aspiring actresses who both start sleeping with the same guy who apparently dies in an exploding flower shop. It turns out, he’s a secret agent for one or more governments, and the two women track him down only to find themselves ensnared in a web of intrigue.

This is a pretty unremarkable comedy, except that George Carlin has a small role as a hippy who pretends to be an Indian tracker. It was a nice little surprise in the middle of a paint-by-numbers comedy, but even Carlin can only do so much.
