Pollyanna (1960)

Pollyanna (1960)

Directed by: David Swift

Starring: Jane Wyman, Hayley Mills, Richard Egan

Ugh, I hate movies like this. It’s all happiness and rainbows and sunshine and NOTHING EVER FUCKING HAPPENS! Also, the movie poster guys apparently can’t even fucking spell the name of the film (or maybe this is in some foreign language where they don’t double up on letters, I guess that’s possible).

Pollyanna is a little girl who goes to live with her rich aunt after her father dies, and uses her “glad game” to cheer up the whole town. The glad game means finding something to be happy about. Anyway, the story culminates (and starts) as the town throws a carnival to raise money to demolish an old orphanage, but the aunt who basically controls the town is opposed to it, but they do it anyway. Pollyanna is a main figure of this carnival, as she has to dress like a flag and sing the National Anthem, and when she sneaks back into her aunt’s house, she falls from a tree and has both her legs paralyzed. The end of the movie is the rest of the town telling her that things are going to be all right, even though they obviously aren’t.

Yeah, the first plot point is an hour and a half into this two hour long film. Everything before that is just people being cranky, and then this girl spouts some platitudes and they get happy. It’s disgusting.
