Summer Magic (1963)

Summer Magic (1963)

Directed by: James Neilson

Starring: Hayley Mills, Dorothy McGuire, Burl Ives

It’s like I just watched the same movie five times in a row, man. And I hated it every time. Who enjoys stuff like this? Who would actually WANT to watch film after film about happy people singing songs and nothing bad ever happens to anybody? There aren’t enough drugs in the world to make real people as pleasantly benign as the characters in these Disney movies.

A family is forced out of their home and riches once their dad dies, so they’re forced to move to a quaint little village in the country. The kids learn the value of a good day’s work, and they sing a thousand songs about everything that flickers into their doped-up minds. As a special bonus, Burl Ives sings a song about how ugly bugs are! Yay…?

So I complained about Pollyanna not having a conflict until the very end of the film, but there’s NEVER a conflict in Summer Magic. The idea is that they’re staying in this cottage that’s owned by some other guy, and Burl rented it out to them without asking, but when the guy gets there and finds out… he doesn’t care. He just dances with Hayley Mills and the movie ends. The movie ends AT the first plot point. FUCK YOU, DISNEY!
