Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)

Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)

Directed by: Ishirô Honda

Starring: Akira Takarada, Yuriko Hoshi, Hiroshi Koizumi

This is actually one of my favorite Godzilla movies, and it’s mostly because the non-monster plot of it is really good. Well, comparatively speaking, anyway. As far as Godzilla movies go, this is Seven Samurai.

A gigantic egg washes up on the shores of Japan, and it’s immediately bought by some greedy entrepreneur. When two tiny ladies from Infant Island ask for the giant egg back, saying that it belongs to their giant moth god, Mothra, only a pair of reporters will listen to them, and try to help them out. Unfortunately, it’s around that point that Godzilla starts attacking AGAIN, and they realize their only hope is to get Mothra on their side.

Mothra is really an underrated Godzilla monster. I mean, yeah, she’s a giant moth and/or two little moth larvae, and that’s pretty lame, but Mothra is the only one of the monsters that has a consistent character that she’s had the entire series, and that should be worth something.
