Danny Deckchair (2003)

Directed by: Jeff Balsmeyer

Starring: Rhys Ifans, Miranda Otto, Justine Clarke

This is actually a pretty cute romantic comedy. It might be partly because I watched this with my girlfriend, so I may be a bit biased, but still, I thought it was pretty good.

A guy with a shitty life gets a random whim to see if he can fly by attaching helium-filled balloons to a deck chair. Of course, it works, and he’s accidentally swept away into a storm cloud, and deposited in a small town out in the country. While his girlfriend is enjoying the media attention regarding his disappearance and sleeping with a reporter, Danny reinvents his life, actually being happy for once, and having a romance with a traffic cop.

It’s pretty formulaic, and it’s really hard to look at the main character because he has a face like a mummy, but it’s got some legitimately funny moments, like when he gets shot down out of the sky by fireworks and people think he’s an alien for the first half of the movie. What really bothered me was that, at no point, does anybody in the town he lands in ask his name or where he came from, even the lady whose backyard he crashes into. Wouldn’t those be the very first things you’d ask? I guess it doesn’t really matter.
