The Nude Bomb (1980)

The Nude Bomb (1980)

Directed by: Clive Donner

Starring: Don Adams, Sylvia Kristel, Rhonda Fleming

Remember Get Smart? That TV series from the 60’s that was written by Mel Brooks and was about an idiotic spy and which was actually pretty funny? Well, if you wanted to see it’s reanimated corpse shambling through the motions, then The Nude Bomb is for you!

Maxwell Smart is back after ten years, and boy has he forgotten how to be funny! He has to stop KAOS from deploying their sinister “nude bombs”, which disintegrate clothing and that’s it. It’s all part of a scheme to instate the leader of KAOS as the world’s only source of fashion, you see. Ugh.

The Nude Bomb uses every single recurring gag from Get Smart (of which there are a ton, apparently), and manages to make each and every one of them completely humorless and just kinda sad. Even Don Adams is obviously not into it, removing the only hope this film had of not being terrible. It’s unfortunate, really, but at least there’s a modern Get Smart movie now so The Nude Bomb can be more easily forgotten.
