Cathy’s Curse (1977)

Cathy’s Curse (1977)

Directed by: Eddy Matalon

Starring: Alan Scarfe, Beverly Murray, Randi Allen

What do you get when you mix creepy little girls, dolls that come to life, and ghosts that set things on fire? You get a movie that is very, very creepy to me. I know, it’s not all that original, there’s obviously a lot of The Exorcist and The Omen in here, but still… if it works, why fix it?

A family moves into a house who’s previous occupants died in a fiery car crash. The little girl finds a ratty old doll, and starts acting creepier and creepier. She replays the car crash with the neighbor kids, she starts hating her mother (as the dead little girl did), and… mind controls an old man and makes him think he sees snakes. You know, standard horror movie creepy little girl stuff.

I actually think this is a pretty good horror movie. The girl is REALLY creepy, and it doesn’t get too overcomplicated about what’s going on, like a lot of modern supernatural horror movies like to do. A kid died and now she’s a ghost inhabiting a doll, which is controlling this little girl and forcing her to be evil and kill people and what have you. Not only that, but it’s got that perfect 60’s/70’s feel to it, which I think adds a lot to a horror movie. I guess that could just be one of my things. Anyway, I recommend it.
