2010 (1984)

Directed by: Peter Hyams

Starring: Roy Scheider, John Lithgow, Helen Mirren

Oh yeah, this is supposed to be the “year we make contact”, isn’t it? I forgot all about that. I guess what with us not finding any monoliths on the moon nine years ago and us not being able to get to Jupiter yet, it’s not really all that likely that it’ll happen.

Years after… whatever the fuck happened there at the end of 2001, Dave Bowman’s boss hitches on a ride with some Russians to go figure out just what the fuck happened with H.A.L. 9000 and Dave and all that weird stuff. Then like, the ghost of Dave visits his mom and wife or something, but it doesn’t make any sense, and then the movie falls apart even more.

The first movie had this cool atmospheric feeling throughout, which is really why it’s so amazing (well, that and the awesome visuals, of course). 2010, on the other hand, is just this nonsense jumble of pointlessness. I mean, at first their whole goal is to find the Discovery and find out what happened, but it seems like right after they get there, they have no more idea what the fuck they’re supposed to be doing. One guy tries to fix H.A.L., and others want to check out the monolith, but they forget, and then… ghost Dave… Ugh.

I’m not a fan of these books anyway, but I gotta say, this is a really stupid movie. I like 2001 just fine, and I can see WHY they made this, but it just really doesn’t work. At all. IT MAKES NO SENSE.
