The She Beast (1966)

The She Beast (1966)

Directed by: Michael Reeves

Starring: Barbara Steele, John Karlsen, Ian Ogilvy

In other ‘actors that always do the same thing’ news, I recently watched yet another Barbara Steele movie where she plays a witch who kills people. Literally, I don’t think she does anything else. At least this time she was in a monster outfit for most of the movie.

A honeymooning English couple decide to visit Transylvania for their honeymoon, because they have absolutely no sense of taste. Their unpleasant stay at an unpleasant hotel ends with the manager peeping on them as they have sex, and they drive away unhappy. On their way out, they drive into a lake and the woman is possessed by a witch who was drowned there hundreds of years ago, who then goes out to take revenge and kill the descendants of the people who killed her.

Of course, the monster outfit was the weirdest part of this movie. I mean, witches aren’t generally portrayed as cheap Halloween monsters (well… not as THAT type of cheap Halloween monsters), and I always figured Barbara Steele’s big draw to these kinds of movies was her sex appeal. So long as you’re into scary, skinny Italian chicks, that is. And here she is, in a suit most of the time. Or maybe it wasn’t even her, I don’t know. Maybe she only had a day or something she was available and they did it for the name recognition. Again, I don’t know, nor do I really care all that much.
