Lethal Weapon 2 (1989)

Lethal Weapon 2 (1989)

Directed by: Richard Donner

Starring: Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci

The Lethal Weapon series is basically the gold standard for buddy cop movies, and as such, it’s pretty incredibly bad. Even worse, the slight “edge” that the first film had where the main characters were still trying to figure out how to work together is completely gone by even this first sequel, and instead we have to deal with Joe Pesci in his most annoying role ever. Which is amazing.

Only two brash cops are willing to take on the South African diplomatic office, who are not only crazy fascist racists, but who are also misusing their democratic privileges to do illegal stuff and not get caught. Then.. everybody shoots at each other a lot for like an hour.

Not sure why action movies like this think that they don’t need anything except people hiding behind cars and shooting at each other for half the film, but it’s a little disturbing that it’s the same trend that shooter video games seem to be taking nowadays. Troubling in that it’s boring, but on the other hand… let’s cash in on this bitch! Lethal Weapon: The Video Game! Mel Gibson and Danny Glover have to stop evil alien Nazi monsters who’re trying to summon Cthulu on Mars. Every Xbox achievement is named “I’m Gettin’ Too Old For This…” I’m gonna make a billion dollars.
