At the Circus (1939)

At the Circus (1939)

Directed by: Edward Buzzell

Starring: Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, Harpo Marx

You know, the whole structure of these old comedies where there’s like a serious plot with song numbers, and then there’s also the wacky guys who sometimes intermingle with the serious plot’s cast… it’s not something you see anymore. Probably too different from the standard movie structure for modern audiences. In fact, I’m not a huge fan of the structure either, but who cares, it’s the Marx Brothers!

A lawyer (Groucho) is hired by a circus to help the owner raise the money he needs to keep the circus in business… and wackiness ensues.

This isn’t the best Marx Brothers movie I’ve seen, but it was still pretty good. I’ve probably said this before, I just love the way they mix wordplay and puns and old fashioned physical comedy. Seriously, it’s a perfect mix: Groucho is the fast talker, Harpo is the crazy bastard mime clown, and Chico is the bridge in between. It’s just a really solid formula and some hilarious performers. What else could you want (besides less of the serious plot, that is)?
