Within the Rock (1996)

Within the Rock (1996)

Directed by: Gary J. Tunnicliffe

Starring: Xander Berkeley, Caroline Barclay, Bradford Tatum

The prequel to the big-budget Sean Connery vehicle The Rock, Within the Rock is… wait… no, this is just a dumb sci-fi movie that’s a mix of Armageddon and Alien. My bad.

A group of miners are sent to a comet which will crash into Earth unless they drill a big hole in it, then blow it up, and this will… make it change it’s course. Anyway, they find an alien monster in the asteroid and it eats most of them until they finally defeat it with fire extinguishers.

I’ve seen so many of these types of movies, and really the only way to distinguish them is how cool the alien monster costume looks. The one in Within the Rock is actually pretty well-made, and they don’t show it all that much, so it doesn’t lose it’s effectiveness, so that’s cool. There’s even one scene where it’s hiding in plain sight and you don’t see it until it moves. That was an unexpected touch. Too bad the rest of the movie is full of dull, cookie-cutter characters and it has the most generic space-horror plot ever.
