Mystery Men (1999)

Mystery Men (1999)

Directed by: Kinka Usher

Starring: Ben Stiller, William H. Macy, Hank Azaria

Yeah, I actually kinda like this movie. It was a lot better before I knew about things like Watchmen or Kick-Ass. Not because those are better (they aren’t), but because it’s the same sort of idea, and that made me keep thinking about them. Stupid bad movies ruining my goofy superhero comedy.

Mystery Men is about a group of “superheroes” with little to no real powers of any note who have to save the city from a supervillain and his lackeys after he kills the city’s REAL superhero.

This movie is simple, but funny enough. Yes, despite Ben Stiller. Mostly it’s all William H. Macy and Hank Azaria who provide all the comedy, but there are some other good performances in there. In fact, the ensemble cast is the strongest point of this movie, and there’s some good stuff in there. I love Tom Waits as the team’s Q, Geoffrey Rush does a great, weird bad guy, Greg Kinnear does a surprisingly good job as the moronic superhero, and hell, even Janeane Garofalo is uncharacteristically funny.

Overall, I’d say it’s worth a watch. Maybe not much more than that, but it’s worth it at least once. Mostly for William H. Macy and Hank Azaria.
