The Brain From Planet Arous (1957)

The Brain From Planet Arous (1957)

Directed by: Nathan Juran

Starring: John Agar, Joyce Meadows, Robert Fuller

AUUGH! What the hell is wrong with John Agar’s face on that poster? He doesn’t just look evil, he’s Mephitic and shooting lasers out of his eyes! I’m gonna have nightmares.

A giant floating (evil) brain from space (or planet “Arous”, I guess) comes to Earth and takes over the body of John Agar, simple nuclear researcher and apparent cave scientist. While in Agar, he uses his powers to destroy towns and planes and to try and take over the world. Also, he makes really awkward passes as Agar’s girlfriend. Luckily for Earth, another giant floating (good) brain from space comes down to stop the evil brain. This one takes over a dog. In the end, they drive the evil brain out and kill it with an axe. Some all-powerful overlord.

There’s some funny stuff in this movie, not the least of which being the climactic scene where John Agar gets a giant axe tangled up in the wires suspending the big, bad brain from the ceiling. Pretty good stuff.
