Muppets from Space (1999)

Muppets from Space (1999)

Directed by: Tim Hill

Starring:  Dave Goelz, Bill Barretta, Jerry Nelson

I can’t really say that I was ever looking forward to seeing this movie. Ever since Jim Henson died, the muppets have been… lackluster, at best. It’s amazing how much influence one man can have, which just makes it even sadder when one of those men passes away.

Muppets from Space is a return to the pre-Henson’s death days where the muppets are just themselves and they aren’t playing characters from classic stories. Apparently, all the muppets live in a big house together instead, because it’s not like there are a billion of the damn things or anything. The main point of the movie is Gonzo being contacted by aliens (which turn out to be his race) and how he doesn’t want to be alone anymore or something.

It’s… not a very good muppet movie. It really tries to recapture the feeling of the older films, but it kinda falls flat. It’s got a cavalcade of C-list “cameos” which make it feel hollow instead of funny. Really, the biggest feeling out of the whole movie is that they’re grasping for a former greatness and failing in a big way. It’s pretty depressing.
