Alien Apocalypse (2005)

alien-apocalypseAlien Apocalypse (2005)

Directed by: Josh Becker

Starring: Bruce Campbell, Renée O’Connor, Remington Franklin

two-stars

I actually bought this movie, instead of just watching it on TV or… eh… acquiring it some other way. But how could you blame me? Just look at that cover! Bruce Campbell’s holding a snakeskin crossbow AND a shotgun that shoots fire! HOW COULD THIS NOT BE AWESOME?!

Well, the first thing is that he has neither of those things in the movie. Stupid dumb poster… Alien Apocalypse takes place in the far off year of… like 40 years from now-ish. Campbell and the chick from Xena (the lesbian one, remember her career?) and a couple other throwaway characters were astronauts on a space probe in suspended animation for… no adequately explained reason. When they get back to Earth, they find that badly CGI’d bug aliens have taken over the planet and enslaved what’s left of mankind in their sawmills, because they value wood more than anything else. Seriously. This is the setup. It may not surprise you at this point that this was a SciFi Channel original movie.

Anyway, Bruce Campbell has to lead the human revolution against the bug people, and actually does it pretty handily. I really have no idea how these bug guys took over the world in the first place. Also, it’s only been 20 years since the “alien apocalypse,” if you will, and everything’s turned into Mad Max times. People have forgotten what doctors are and what handshakes are… I can almost believe that stuff, actually.

In any case, this is a pretty stupid movie. And yet… it’s almost worth it just for Bruce Campbell. Why isn’t he in stupid movies like this anymore? Maybe his books are selling, so he doesn’t need to rely on them to eat, who knows.
