Maybe I’m just old, but the current trend of young adult sci-fi/action stuff just doesn’t do it for me. Harry Potter didn’t do it for me, Twilight definitely didn’t do anything, and The Hunger Games feels the same way; it’s just not satisfying from an adult perspective for me. I’m tired of seeing the generic young adult stories done with one crazy sci-fi difference, it’s just as whiny and teen as it would be otherwise.

Remember in The Hunger Games where Jennifer Lawrence had to fight a bunch of other teens in a crazy forest? Well, this is the same thing EXCEPT now it’s in a… different forest. With a lake. And some of the people she has to kill are slightly different characters. And it takes an hour to get to the contest for some reason, I guess Woody Harrelson got a better contract or something.

What I do like in this series is Donald Sutherland as the cartoonishly evil emperor guy, just because Donald Sutherland is pretty much always great. I kinda wish his master plan was something other than “let’s just wait this rebellion thing out, I’m sure they’ll just get tired and quit.” It doesn’t really fit with an evil mastermind type of character, and it DOES fit very well with a vague evil force that’s supposed to have a master plan but the writer doesn’t really know where they’re going to go with it yet. I can’t wait for the third movie, in which they no doubt find some other lame reason to do the exact same thing again but with a mild twist.
