Starring: Sandra Bullock, Julian McMahon, Amber Valletta
Remember The Sixth Sense? Remember… uh… actually I don’t need to stretch this premise any farther than The Sixth Sense because that’s the atmosphere that this film tries really fucking hard to replicate. Pretty weird to think that M. Night Shyamalan once made a movie so good that people actually wanted to copy it. Or watch it in the first place.
Sandra Bullock learns that her husband died in a car accident, but the next day she wakes up and learns that he’s not dead and also it’s a week ago! Basically she lives a week out of sequence, and the whole thing culminates in the day her husband dies in a crash and her going crazy both before and after it.
If that sounds like a neat premise for a movie, welcome to my blog, Christopher Nolan! For the rest of us, it probably sounds just as annoying as it actually is. You already know everything that’s going to happen, and in fact that is the entire point, but instead of being able to just go home and forget about it and get on with your life, you have to watch Bullock slowly assemble the incredibly obvious pieces of the fatalistic puzzle. It’s never really tense enough to be a thriller and it’s never emotional enough to really be drama… so I guess this is science fiction? Man, that sucks.
