A Night at the Opera (1935)

night at the operaA Night at the Opera (1935)

Directed by: Sam Wood

Starring: Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, Harpo Marx

Aww yeah, Marx Brothers movies. It’s pretty amazing at how incredibly funny these guys are, there just isn’t a modern analogue. The only problem I have with these movies is the amount of time they spend on unrelated songs and extended piano/harp solos. I know that’s just an artifact of the times, but it’s like watching a Godzilla movie and having to sit through the non-monster stuff to get to what you really want to see.

An opera company featuring a stuck-up male lead travels by boat to New York, where the producer (Groucho) gets fired for inadvertently smuggling Chico and Harpo and the good guy opera singer in his luggage, so they all decide to get back at the opera company and sabotage it during the opera until they fire the asshole and hire the good guy who is also in love with the female lead.

There are a couple great gags in here, like Groucho and Chico going through a contract together and Groucho ordering hard boiled eggs and that bit where they move beds from one room to the other… Look, it doesn’t sound funny when I describe it, it just fucking is OKAY?!
