Directed by: Rawson Marshall Thurber
Starring: Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Vince Vaughn
This is probably the best Ben Stiller movie I’ve seen, and it was really not good. Nearly not good at all. What puts Dodgeball above the rest is that there were like half a dozen legitimately funny moments in it, which puts it miles above the standard Stiller fare. For that matter, it’s also the best Vince Vaughn movie I’ve seen.
A small hometown gym run by an affable yet completely personalityless Vince Vaughn is in trouble of being bought out by the neighboring big gym run by a cartoonishly villainous Ben Stiller. To raise the money they need to save their gym, Vaughn and his motley crew of people who go to the gym form a dodgeball team and compete professionally until they get to the finals. Of course, the finals are against Stiller’s team and etc etc sports movie.
The highlight of Dodgeball is Rip Torn as the cranky old dodgeball expert who trains the team with questionable methods like swearing at them and throwing wrenches and what have you. Even with that, Dodgeball follows the standard sports movie formula to the letter, they take no chances whatsoever. So, if you’re looking for a mildly funny movie that doesn’t challenge you in any way, here’s one of thousands of films that would fit that bill.
