I know, I know, it’s a movie version of a 90’s TV show and I didn’t give it one star. I hate the trope as much as anyone else and I tried really hard to justify only giving 21 Jump Street one star, but the truth of the matter is that it was actually kinda funny. I KNOW! I HATE IT!
Two new cops are sent to go undercover at a high school to determine the source of a new drug that all the kids are doing nowadays. They accidentally get their roles switched around and the dumpy nerd gets a chance to be popular while the dumb jock has to pretend to be a nerd. They both get way too wrapped up in going back to high school and do a shitty job with their undercover work until the eventually get it done and everyone lives happily ever after.
I’ve never liked Jonah Hill, but he and Channing Tatum have a really good chemistry in this movie and they play off of each other really well. Hell, even Ice Cube has a good role in this movie, and he’s another guy that can’t really act. It’s a very standard sort of mass-appealing humor that you’d expect from a film based on a TV show, but it’s also got enough meta-humor and things which are just kinda weird to set it above the norm and make it… funny. I’m freakin’ out.
