Directed by: Eric Idle, Gary Weis
Starring: Eric Idle, John Halsey, Ricky Fataar
This TV movie is basically an extended Monty Python sketch, but only Eric Idle’s in it and the rest of the people are from the original cast of Saturday Night Live. That sounds like it could be pretty decent, but it just never really works, unfortunately.
All You Need Is Cash is a mockumentary about a band named The Rutles, who are exactly the same as The Beatles. There are lots and lots of songs which sound exactly like Beatles songs but with different lyrics, and occasional Python-esque sketches. Not to mention the plethora of cameos, which range from Bill Murray and John Belushi to Mick Jagger and Paul Simon.
Probably my biggest problem with this movie was that it was mostly focused on the songs, which were good Beatles-like songs, but they weren’t funny at all. They weren’t even trying to be funny most of the time. That, and the way they portrayed the Rutles was as wacky fun-loving weirdos… which is exactly what the Beatles were anyway, so it’s not even a parody. I dunno, it just feels like a low point for Eric Idle’s brand of Python humor (at least, at this point).
