Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers (2002)

Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers (2002)

Directed by: Michael Vejar

Starring: Dylan Neal, Andreas Katsulas, Alex Zahara

After the failure of the first Babylon 5 spinoff series, Crusade, J. Michael Straczynski wrote this pilot for yet another spinoff and somehow got TNT to play it despite how profoundly stupid that is. And don’t get me wrong, it’s not just the idea that he tried to get another spinoff going that’s stupid, it’s also the actual content of the “film”.

A wackily mis-matched and racially diverse crew straight out of space adventuring school get a ship and go on a space adventure, which involves a bunch of diplomats and some vaguely evil aliens, and also a weird subplot about ghosts from the previous crew haunting the psychic alien guy.

This movie is terrible. Everything about it is awful. It somehow has worse graphics than Babylon 5, which was using CGI made in 1995, and the sheer blandness of the premise and characters is almost insulting to the rest of the series. I’m glad JMS moved on to do Spider-Man comics that everybody hated instead of trying to bring the rotting horse that was Babylon 5 back again.
