Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

Directed by: Roger Spottiswoode

Starring: Pierce Brosnan, Jonathan Pryce, Michelle Yeoh

I think Pierce Brosnan is a pretty good James Bond, but he was basically only in one good Bond movie, Goldeneye. The rest of these are pretty awful. Teri Hatcher is a Bond girl in this movie, for fuck’s sake.

A crazy media mogul (who pretty strongly resembles Steve Jobs) is trying to start a war between Britain and China by making events happen, then blowing them out of proportion on his TV shows and newspapers. Bond and a Chinese agent team up to take the madman down, along with his right hand man (who pretty strongly resembles Steve Wozniak).

Yeah, I’m not exactly sure why the bad guys in this movie are the founders of Apple Computers, but they pretty definitely are. And while I normally like Jonathan Pryce (he is the lead in my favorite movie, Brazil), he’s fucking terrible in this film. Chewing up the scenery, acting like he’s in an empty room and nobody can see him… it’s shameful. The only memorable action scene in the film is a car chase where Bond remotely controls his car from his phone, but… it’s a car chase. There is at least one of those in every single one of these movies. This is a really bad one.
