Damn, it’s extremely rare when I rate a movie better than the average on IMDb, but apparently this is a seriously underrated movie. It probably does help that I’ve been watching the Lethal Weapon movies recently, and this is a pretty direct parody of those.
A pair of cops team up with the leader of the girl scouts (Kathy Ireland) to thwart an evil criminal mastermind (William Shatner) and his terrible henchman (Tim Curry) from using the cookies to covertly transport cocaine.
Loaded Weapon 1 is very much in the same vein of other parody movies around the same time, like Hot Shots! or The Naked Gun. It’s not quite Airplane!, but it has that same fervent energy that I absolutely love in these movies, and it’s not crippled by endless specific movie references like modern parody films tend to do. They just take the principle idea, then shove in weird shit all over the place. Emilio Estevez is actually really funny in this movie, and it’s weird to see Sam Jackson cast as the “by-the-book” cop (Pulp Fiction wasn’t for another year, so he didn’t have that connotation yet). Even Whoopie Goldberg is funny in this movie, for chrissakes. Just go watch it already.
