Just like the original Genius Party, Beyond is a collection of short anime films which range from the totally bizarre to the only marginally bizarre. Also like the original, most of them are gorgeous.
Let’s see, the first film is about tiny people who play music to grow a plant from a seed, then there’s one with a group of people following a treasure map which leads them to a tourist trap (I actually quite liked the style of this one). Then there’s the most insane one, which is a child’s dream as his mom is in surgery, and it’s… I have no idea how to describe the art in this. It’s fucking nuts. Finally we have one where a girl makes mini-Akiras in teddy bears and one where there’s a devil or something and it befriends a girl I think.
Good luck finding a better synopsis of these shorts, because they’re all fucking weird as hell. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It is pretty much par for the course that short animated films are more about style than substance, so as long as you go into it with that mindset (and maybe a couple pounds of weed), it’s a fun hour and a half.
