I actually went out and saw a movie in theaters! I know, crazy, right? Who knew they still did that sorta thing. I saw this with my friend who is a huge fan of the book series this movie was based on, and which I have never read. He was super excited about it, so I guess it did a pretty good job of adapting the source material.
An ex-Civil War cavalryman accidentally finds himself transported to Mars, where he is much stronger due to the lower gravity, and also there are lots of aliens with crazy laser guns and dirigibles and what have you. He joins up with the princess of one of the clans of human-looking aliens to take down a group of space monks who are trying to unite the world under the rule of a bad guy.
John Carter is a fun adventure movie. It’s not haute cinema or anything like that, and it’s not as well-rounded as Andrew Stanton’s last film, WALL-E. Not that it needs to be, or anything, just don’t go into it expecting some grand science fiction epic or anything. Pretty much if you treat it like watching an Indiana Jones movie with aliens (but… better than Crystal Skull), you’ll have fun.
