Green Lantern: Emerald Knights (2011)

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights

Directed by: Chris Berkeley, Lauren Montgomery, Jay Oliva

Starring: Nathan Fillion, Jason Isaacs, Elisabeth Moss

I guess this was supposed to be an animated tie-in to the Ryan Reynolds blockbuster that came out earlier this year, as a way to explain some of the minor characters which weren’t actually developed in the film and which were basically just in-jokes. It fails.

A bad Green Lantern somehow became made of antimatter and now lives in the middle of a sun with a bunch of “shadow demons”. However, this plot doesn’t really matter, as most of the movie is just Hal Jordan telling in-depth origin stories of other Green Lanterns that nobody cares about, like Kilowog.

This movie is five flashbacks/origin stories with a peppering of this really terrible, extremely retarded story… and the whole thing just reminds one of Star Wars. The Green Lanterns are constantly using their rings as laser guns as they fly around in space blowing up spaceships, and the one other thing they make with their rings are swords. Swords so they can have elaborate, terrible-looking swordfights. Green Lantern: Emerald Knights is kinda like The Animatrix, only every element of it is worse. And I say that as someone who actually kinda likes the Green Lantern franchise.
