Anvil! The Story of Anvil is the most amazing documentary I’ve ever seen. A title that previously went to… Jesus Camp, I guess. It’s AMAZING! It’s like a completely real-life This is Spinal Tap, you just can’t believe that these are real people and this is a real band. It’s almost easier to accept that the band’s thirty year history was all a brilliant lead-up to this masterpiece of comedy.
Anvil! The Story of Anvil is the story of the heavy metal band Anvil, who released maybe three decent albums back in the early 80’s, and who have released ten extremely mediocre albums since, most independently released. This doc follows the band as they have a disastrous tour of Europe (which ends in a concert for thirty people), their attempts to get a label to pick up their thirteenth album, and a final happy note where they play a concert in Japan… at 11:30 am.
This movie has a brutal honesty to it that just doesn’t seem possible with real people. I guess the guys could’ve been playing it up for the cameras a bit, but even then, there’s just all this background that makes for these fantastically hilarious characters. And that’s what this movie is, it’s a comedy. Like I said, it’s exactly Spinal Tap. Only you don’t have that comforting notion that these are just actors playing a role. You don’t get to say to yourself, “oh, these people aren’t real, it’s perfectly fine to laugh at their failures”. But you laugh anyway, because you’re a bad person, and because they’re fucking hilarious. I seriously encourage anyone who enjoyed This is Spinal Tap to see this film, because it’ll just blow you away.
Oh, also, it’s an exceptionally well-made documentary. I felt bad about not mentioning that.
