Evil Dead II (1987)

Evil Dead II (1987)

Directed by: Sam Raimi

Starring: Bruce Campbell, Sarah Berry, Dan Hicks

Evil Dead II is a great film. I remember the first time I saw it, I went into it thinking it was going to be goddamn awful, and I appeared to be proven right for the first twenty minutes or so. But by the time Ash is chopping off his own hand and is dancing with a lamp… it’s just way too fun to stay pessimistic at.

The film starts with a retcon of the first Evil Dead, now it’s just Ash and his girlfriend who go to the cabin and discover the recording of the reading of the Necronomicon. She gets possessed and he has to kill her, and things get worse from there for him. Even worse, another group of people (who were coming to help the guy who owns the cabin with his translations) get there, which equals more fodder for the evil forces to possess and just basically fuck with Ash.

This movie definitely has horror elements to it, but compared to the first film, it’s practically a comedy. Everything is much more… well, more. There are just completely ridiculous horror sequences mixed with Three Stooges-esque physical comedy, hell, even the gore is funny in this movie. Also, here’s where Bruce Campbell really shines, which is especially evident in the first half hour or so of the film where it’s basically just him being attacked by doors and his own disembodied hand. Like I said, Evil Dead II is a great film, and everybody, EVERYBODY, should see it. RIGHT NOW. GO!
