This is part five of six, and it’s episodic, and I haven’t seen the first four movies in the series. Normally I would want to not watch this until I’d seen those, but… well, fuck that. Josh Kirby… Time Warrior is not worth my effort to track down and watch five more movies.
So the backstory is that there’s this professor guy and a kid from modern times and a girl from the future and some sort of little… cat midget thing. And they’re all travelling through time (and space, apparently) to get all the pieces to some macguffin that’ll destroy the universe. They end up in a cave full of mushroom people and help them get rid of their threat, the “chomper”, a giant robotic rat that eats mushroom people. The twist at the end of the story is that the professor is actually the bad guy, and the recurring bad guy just wanted to stop him! That might’ve meant something had I watched them all!
It’s a pretty cookie-cutter kid’s science fantasy film, but I gotta give them some credit. The mushroom people costumes are actually spectacularly well-done, for one thing. I can’t think of another movie I’ve seen mushroom people in before, but they would probably not have looked as good as this movie. Also, the twist at the end is decent, and they actually spent some time within the frame of the film to explain things from previous movie you needed to know for this one. But still, I ain’t watchin’ five more of these. Probably because I’ll never find them.
