Die Hard (1988)

Die Hard (1988)

Directed by: John McTiernan

Starring: Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman, Bonnie Bedelia

Man, it has been a LONG time since I saw Die Hard. It’s a staple of the genre, there’s no two ways about that. Also there’s the career starting for Bruce Willis in here… Yeah, pretty good movie about people trying to keep each other from doing anything… and succeeding.

Die Hard (the character Bruce Willis plays is named “Die Hard”) is a New York cop come to visit his wife in L.A., when she and her co-workers are held hostage by an evil British terrorist man (Rickman) who’s trying to steal money or something boring like that. McClane is the only one in the building with the smarts and intuition to get around the guards and save the hostages. Featuring Carl Winslow as himself.

What makes this a really effective action movie is that it’s 70% suspense, 30% action. Just enough action to still be exciting, and just enough suspense that it’s still suspenseful and not boring. It’s a pretty tough middle ground to hit, but Die Hard does it very well. Also, Alan Rickman is a good bad guy. It’s a shame he plays such an awful character in the Harry Potter movies, or him fighting Gary Oldman could’ve been an awesome moment in film history.
