Directed by: David Lynch
Starring: Kyle MacLachlan, Kenneth McMillan, Francesca Annis
So my friend Zach gave me another mini-challenge: To watch five (seemingly random) David Lynch films. Even though I hated Eraserhead, I decided to belly up to the bar of confusion and work my way through it. WILL I SURVIVE?! PROBABLY, HUH?!
Dune is based on the political intrigue of Frank Herbert where, in the future, there’s this crazy desert planet where they mine magic spice out of giant worms. One of the galaxy’s royal families goes there to take over, and are betrayed, except for the duchess and her son, Paul Atreides. They go out to live with the desert people, and it turns out that Paul is actually a prophesied messianic figure who is said to save their planet from the jerks who mine for spice from it. Then he stabs Sting with a knife!
This is pretty much the best movie adaptation you could make out of the clusterfuck that is Dune that could fit in two hours. Obviously, I’m not a big fan of the books, but this movie does a pretty decent job of turning the first one into an entertaining film. However, mostly it’s the really good performances by almost everybody and the amazing special effects. Man, the special effects still look good.
