Anatomy of an Illness (1984)

Anatomy of an Illness (1984)

Directed by: Richard T. Heffron

Starring: Edward Asner, Eli Wallach, Millie Perkins

I don’t really get the point of this movie. I mean, I guess it’s supposed to be about how laughter is the best medicine or something, but mostly it’s just Ed Asner being annoying as hell.

Asner is an old rich guy who comes down with some fatal disease that’s going to kill him. Instead of taking the prescribed medicine, he decides to go on a vitamin C drip, and to watch Marx Brothers movies while in the hospital. Against all odds, he starts getting better, until finally he’s perfectly fine. A triumph of the human spirit!

Except that there’s a really short exchange at the end of the film between two doctors where they basically say that he must’ve been misdiagnosed, because otherwise he couldn’t have gotten better. So it’s either this miracle caused by watching Groucho, or he miraculously recovered from nothing. So… I just watched an hour and a half of Ed Asner aggravating doctors for no reason. Thanks for that.
